Textiles

Textiles Categories and Symbols

Symbols and motives have always been an integral part of Japanese art, both in traditional and modern designs. Hence, there is a meaning behind every print, embroidery, and woven kimono symbol.

Kimonos are still worn at formal occasions such as weddings, graduations, and tea ceremonies. Because of this, the decorative motives that embellish these garments have earned great significance.

The patterns and designs represent messages of love, rebirth, new beginnings, and the transience of life. They also symbolise good fortune, longevity, steadfastness, wisdom and protection against evil, in addition to learning, knowledge, culture, beauty as well as honesty and obedience.

Silks and Silk Jacquard

Exquisitely printed and handpainted designs on plain, textured, and jacquard silk weaves. All the prints have designs and motifs associated with messages packed with significant meaning.

Wool Kasuri and Ikats

Kasuri is a fabric that has been woven with thread fibres dyed specifically to create patterns and images in the material. The technique is similar to that of ikat patterns, which originated around the world simultaneously with kasuri. Because the individual threads are dyed (versus printed on one side of the fabric,) the design is woven into the fabric, allowing it to appear on both sides.

The Wedding Obi

Represented by rich weaving and embroidery techniques that incorporates gold thread and rich colours associated with wealth and prosperity, a wedding Obi will be highly decorated with symbols that focus on messages of: Love, Wealth, Longevity and Honesty.

Indigo Prints

The beautiful Japanese indigo prints are created using rice paste resist dyeing techniques. Using a combination of stencils, hand painting with tsutsu tubes or stitching such as shibori all these techniques combined with indigo dye, create textiles and designs of unparalleled sophistication.

Kasuri and Ikat

Kasuri is a fabric that has been woven with thread fibres dyed specifically to create patterns and images in the material. The technique is similar to that of ikat patterns, where the individual threads are dyed the design is woven into the fabric and appears on both sides. The beautiful combination of white and indigo dyed cotton threads became popular during the Edo period 1603-1868, these exquisite weaves retain a popular following to this day.

Shibori

A Japanese term for dyeing cloth by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, or compressing the fabric. In the West this process is associated with tie-dyeing. For the Japanese, Shibori is a highly refined and precise dyeing technique.
